Save-It-Easy®

Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Save-It-Easy®?

Save-It-Easy® is an innovative electronic ballast used to retrofit existing fluorescent tube light fixtures fitted with conventional electromagnetic ballasts to take new technology T5 electronic fluorescent lamps. The old fitting itself is not altered or changed in any way - and if you can change a fluorescent light tube - you can fit Save-It-Easy®.

  • Is Save-It-Easy® approved for use in Australia?

    • Yes Save-It-Easy® has European (CE) and Australian approvals for electromagnetic compliance (EMC) and electrical product safety.

What does the Green Starter do - is it really a starter?

The green starter included in the Save-It-Easy® T5 retrofit adaptor kit acts as a connector in the circuit. It is not really a "starter" in the the sense that it does not act as a traditional starter does in an electro-magnetically ballasted circuit. Once the old starter is removed a gap is created in the circuit and our green "starter" plugs the gap to ensure our Save-It-Easy® T5 retrofit adaptors function safely and continuously.

Why upgrade to T5 electronic lamps?

New advances in lighting technology enable T5 electronic high frequency tri-phosphor lamps to produce a light output near equivalent to that of older technology fluorescent lamps at much lower electrical energy consumption.  A summary of T5 lamp characteristics and advantages appear below:

      T5 Characteristics

T5's contain 40% less glass than T8 lamps as they are smaller in diameter i.e. T5's are 5/8th of an inch diameter compared to T8's which are 8/8ths of an inch in diameter,

T5's have less phosphorous than T8 lamps,

T5's contain 70% less Mercury than T8 lamps,

      T5 Advantages

As T5's have smaller diameters 16mm they are smaller lamps therefore less packaging is required which means lower transport/freight costs,

T5's are available in all the same colour options T8 lamps exist in,

T5 lamps are energy efficient and consume less energy for near equivalent light output i.e. 36W T8 can be replaced with a 28W T5 lamp for equivalent lumens,

T5's exhibit much longer lamp life - most Lamp Manufacturers claim an average of 20,000 hours for T5's when compared to an average of between 8-12,000 hours for T8 lamps,

T5 lamps experience less light output degradation over longer periods of operation - new optimised phosphors guarantee a reduced drop in luminous flux over lamp life, light quality is therefore consistent over longer periods and lamp changes are less frequent,

T5 lamp run cooler than T8/T12 lamps - therefore reducing heat loads on building air conditioning systems.

    Why buy Save-It-Easy®?

When deciding whether to buy Save-It-Easy® it is useful to consider the following :

      Scenario One: Do nothing

        Advantages

          No disruption to existing routine

        Disadvantages

          No savings on electricity

Lamps will continue to lose at least 30% of lumen output due to older lamp technology operating principles

Lamp life will continue to be between 50-30% shorter than new technology electronic T5 lamps

Your electricity provider will pass on the full cost of electricity to you as it continues to rise - knowing that you will continue to pay it

Scenario Two: Upgrade to T5 lamps by installing new fittings

        Advantages

Able to use new technology T5 lamps

Benefit from lamp technology advantages and energy saving characteristics

        Disadvantages

Need a qualified electrician to complete the work

          Cost of electrician's labour

Mess and downtime to remove old fittings

          Cost of new fittings

Permanent solution. The fitting remains in the ceiling and cannot be removed without further expense

Some new fitting manufacturers require you use only their own branded lamps in fittings to ensure the lamp warranty remains valid

Some T5 fittings do not exactly fit the hole created in the ceiling when the old T8 fitting is removed - additional cost incurred to repair ceiling

The Answer: Upgrading to T5 lamps using Save-It-Easy®

Save-It-Easy® enables you to use new technology T5 lamps in old T8 fittings

        25% minimum savings guarantee

        2 year replacement warranty

        Rated to 50,000hours

Use any high quality European made T5 lamp with Save-It-Easy®

No flickering - T5 lamps switch on instantaneously and never flicker

        Eliminates the troubleshooting starter

Improve light quality - consistent light for longer periods

Dramatically reduces thermal loss from old magnetic ballast - Save-It-Easy® needs to have the

Portable solution - Save-It-Easy® can be removed from each fitting and refitted into a new location - this is especially handy for tenants

No electrician required - a maintenance person can install Save-It-Easy® or you can do it yourself

No mess - Save-It-Easy® is quick and easy to fit

Low entry cost and no cost of new fittings - the cost of Save-It-Easy® is as low as 1/3 the cost and installation of a new fitting

No damage to ceiling - Save-It-Easy® does not require any alteration of the fitting in relation to the ceiling - therefore no ceiling repairs are required

What independent evidence is there to support the claims made about Save-It-Easy® and what we say it does?

Save-It-Easy® has been tested and checked by independent consultants and laboratories within Australia. We have made available a test report compiled by Light Labs in Sydney which details the performance of Save-It-Easy® retrofitted  T5 electronic lamps in electro-magnetically ballasted T8 luminaires. The report is available here.
